The Young Professionals Committee strives to provide a platform for twenty and thirty somethings to:
- Advance professionally
- Connect to our community
- Enrich relationships
- Become the next generation of leaders in Waukesha County
When I started working for the Waukesha County nearly 3 years ago, one of my duties was overseeing the Young Professionals program we have had for nearly 5 years. Because the average age of my coworkers before I started was over 50, it really didn’t surprise me that they wanted to hand it off to a young punk not too far out of college! I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, but I knew that because I was a Young Professional myself, I was up for the challenge.
Since then, we have lost and gained committee members, started an educational luncheon series, and really upped our game as YP groups go. We do volunteering events as a group and as a committee, and I’ve been impressed with the commitment the committee members have demonstrated.
Another great thing about this committee of leaders: they are always up for trying something new. You’ll never hear someone say “but we have always done it this way, let’s just keep doing it like that.” Young Professionals understand the cliché that change is the only constant, and they are prepared.
I sent out an email broadcast to our Young Professionals listserv this morning about our upcoming networking event. We are calling it Early Bird Networking. We know that not all of our Young Professionals are available to network after hours because of family commitments, job responsibilities, or other networking opportunities, so we wanted to try something new!
Next Thursday morning we will be at Good Harvest Market in Pewaukee from 7-9am. Good Harvest will provide coffee (because lord knows we will need it at that time of day!) and some breakfast goodies. They will give us a rundown of the store, and the background on how they are so much more than just a store.
I’m excited about a chance to meet some other YPs we might not normally get to see. I’m excited about trying something new.
But I’m mostly excited that the committee is up for trying something new. What a great group of people!
